Chinese Laundries in Liverpool: Public Research Register
43 research entries and leads across Liverpool, Wirral, Crewe and Rhyl — an evolving record of businesses, workers and family histories.
Snapshot: 17 October 2026 · Existing entries retained from version 5.10; L20 added from version 5.17. Paragraphs selectively expanded from version 5.25 on 14 October 2026; L21–L23 and the W01 cross-reference added from version 5.29 on 15 October 2026. L24 selectively added from version 5.34 on 17 October 2026.
Important: These are 43 research entries and leads, not 43 independently verified operating laundries. Some entries refer to residences, possible duplicates, unconfirmed premises or original documents describing a person as a laundry worker. Dates are the years documented or reported, not automatically opening or closing dates.
No family photographs, private correspondence, research-only documents or unverified allegations are reproduced here. Historical names retain source spellings; people and businesses with similar names have not been merged without evidence.
How to read the evidence
A: original historical document examined; B: transcription supplied by a named archivist; C: published historical account, official research or collection catalogue; D: family/eyewitness account or contributed recollection; E: unverified identification or hypothesis. More than one grade may apply to different claims within one entry. Some source inspections occurred in earlier research sessions.
On a phone: each record is displayed as a stacked card, with its historical paragraph directly beneath the facts. Each entry has a stable research ID (for example, L02) for future updates.
Liverpool 24 entries
| ID | Address or area | Name / business | Recorded period / evidence | Grade | Classification | What remains unverified | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| L01 | 29/29a Newington | Chin Yee | 1894 original directory; 1888 reported in published research | A, C | Documented address | 1888 entry, opening date and 29/29a numbering need original checks | S1, S2 |
Chin Yee is recorded at Newington in the 1894 Kelly’s directory. Walter Fung’s published research also identifies an 1888 listing, but the earlier original entry still needs checking. The references to 29 and 29a must be reconciled before fixing the precise premises or an opening date; the surviving evidence does not establish uninterrupted trading between those years. | |||||||
| L02 | 230 County Road, Walton | Ming Bing; Loo Sow / Sow Loo; Chong On; later Elea Fong | Laundry evidenced in 1921; 1922–27 archive directory readings; 1955-labelled Fong fragment | A, B, D | Documented business; later succession incomplete | Whether Ming Bing and directory-listed Bing Ning are the same person is unproved; operators in 1928–55 and closure date remain open | S3 |
The 1921 census evidence identifies Ming Bing as the employer, with Loo Sow and Chong On working as laundrymen. Archive-supplied directory transcriptions name Bing Ning in 1922–23 and Sow Loo from 1924–27; certificates describe Sow as a manager in 1922 and a proprietor in 1924. A later directory fragment labelled 1955 names Elea Fong. These records outline several stages of the address’s laundry history, but do not prove that Ming Bing and Bing Ning were the same person or explain the business succession between the Loo and Fong periods. | |||||||
| L03 | 212 Rice Lane, Walton | Lee Lin; Woo Sing | 1927 contributor transcription; 1951 Gazette notice | A, D | Partially documented | No proven continuous business or identity link between named operators | S4 |
A contributed reading of a 1927 directory associates Lee Lin with 212 Rice Lane, while a 1951 London Gazette notice associates Woo Sing with the same address. They provide separate points in the premises’ history, rather than proof of one owner or continuous business throughout the intervening years. The original 1927 page and further address-by-address directory checks are still needed. | |||||||
| L04 | 558 Prescot Road, Old Swan | Loo Din; F. S. Wong (name variants unresolved) | Reported 1927 directory reading | D | Unverified transcription | Confirm original page, spellings and distinctness from L12 | — |
A reported 1927 directory reading places a laundry at 558 Prescot Road, with Loo Din and F. S. Wong appearing in the research as possible operator names. The original page has not been verified, so their spelling, roles and relationship remain open. The similarly named Din Loo / Din Low lead in L12 may concern this business and should not yet be treated as another set of premises. | |||||||
| L05 | 244 West Derby Road | Low Lun Sir | Undated family recollection | D | Reported location | Exact trading years and original directory listing not established | — |
Family recollection associates Low Lun Sir with a laundry at 244 West Derby Road. It supplies a named trader and a numbered address, but no independently established trading period. Original street and trade directories are needed to confirm the listing and trace when the business appeared, changed hands or ceased operating. | |||||||
| L06 | 44 Scotland Road | Jaw Kai / Jaw Kay / Jaw Key | Community recollection; 1946 newspaper-index lead | D | Reported location | Original contemporary entry and spelling unverified; unrelated allegations excluded | — |
Local recollections associate this Scotland Road laundry with a trader whose name appears as Jaw Kai, Jaw Kay and Jaw Key. A 1946 newspaper-index lead offers a route into contemporary reporting, but the full original articles and relevant official records have not been examined for this public entry. The name variants remain unresolved, and this numbered address is kept separate from the Ah Thi / Ah The research in L07. | |||||||
| L07 | Scotland Road; Soho Street (exact numbers unverified) | Ah Thi / Ah The Laundry; Mr Lou | Museum account: wartime Scotland Road damage, business closed 1984; separately captioned Soho Street photograph | C | Published historical account / photo lead | Sequence of addresses and identity of those in separate recollections unverified; photographic reuse not cleared | S5, S6 |
The Museum of Liverpool account connects Mr Lou with Ah Thi Laundry and records wartime damage to its Scotland Road premises and the business’s closure in 1984. A separately captioned photograph identifies an Ah Thi / Ah The laundry on Soho Street. The sequence between those locations, their street numbers and the photograph’s date still need establishing; the two published accounts should not be combined into a complete address history without further evidence. | |||||||
| L08 | 45 Great George Street | C. C. Lee; Lee family | Approx. 1928–32 in published family recollections | C, D | Published family account | Original street and trade directory confirmation outstanding | S7 |
Sue Lee’s published recollections place her father C. C. Lee’s laundry at 45 Great George Street around 1928–32. She describes numbered tickets for customers’ bundles, washing in large yard tubs and heavy irons heated around a coke stove. Her account gives a detailed picture of the work inside the premises, while the approximate dates and address still need comparison with contemporary directories. | |||||||
| L09 | 117 Penny Lane | G. Leong | Historical-society account; 2015 and 2022 photographs of sign/frontage | C, D | Documented historic frontage | Photos do not prove continued trading in 2015 or 2022; opening and closing years unknown | — |
The surviving G. Leong sign and frontage are recorded in photographs dated 2015 and 2022. Tony Smith’s photograph catalogue identifies the latter location as 117 Penny Lane. These are records of a historic shopfront, not evidence that a laundry was still trading when the photographs were taken. Opening and closing dates remain unknown, and no business or family connection has been proved with Leong W. & Son at L20. | |||||||
| L10 | Parkhill Road (number unknown) | Unidentified Chinese laundry | Undated eyewitness recollection | D | Location lead only | Not the Park Road business in L15; verify number, trader and period | — |
A contributor remembers a Chinese laundry on Parkhill Road in Liverpool 8, without supplying a house number or date. This is a different street from the Park Road premises described in Susan Grainger’s oral history, recorded separately as L15. The proprietor, precise location and operating period have not yet been identified. | |||||||
| L11 | Parliament Street / Rialto area (number unknown) | Possible Kwok family association | Undated community recollection | D, E | Tentative location lead | Proprietor, premises and dates unverified | — |
A community recollection places a possible laundry around Parliament Street and the Rialto area, with a tentative Kwok family association. No numbered premises or contemporary business listing has been established. The reported surname remains a research clue rather than an authenticated proprietor’s name, and the operating period is unknown. | |||||||
| L12 | Address unknown (may overlap L04) | Din Loo / Din Low Laundry | Undated family-history lead | D, E | Possible duplicate / unlocated | No separate operating premises established | — |
Family-history leads preserve the business-name readings Din Loo and Din Low, but have not established a separate street address. They may overlap the reported Loo Din laundry at 558 Prescot Road. Until original directories resolve the names and premises, this entry records an unresolved identification rather than another confirmed operating laundry. | |||||||
| L13 | 10 Town Row, West Derby area | Quan and Beatrice Soo family | Published account of family laundry during Frank Soo’s childhood | C, D | Published family account | Original opening and closing dates remain unverified | S8 |
The Frank Soo Foundation’s family account identifies Quan and Beatrice Soo with the laundry at 10 Town Row during the future footballer Frank Soo’s childhood. It provides a family and premises connection, but not verified opening or closing dates. This is a different research case from the Frank Wing Yow Soo family’s Oxton Road laundries in Birkenhead. | |||||||
| L14 | 113 Pitt Street (city attribution unresolved) | Dang Chang | Published descendant recollection; secondary address attribution | D, E | Unconfirmed exact premises | Original directory needed to distinguish Liverpool from Birkenhead address reports | S9 |
A published descendant’s account identifies Dang Chang as a Chinese laundry proprietor, while another reported address attribution gives 113 Pitt Street. The precise premises and city still need checking against an original directory because Liverpool and Birkenhead have been confused in secondary accounts. The laundry’s establishment date remains unverified. | |||||||
| L15 | Park Road (number unknown) | Parents of Susan Grainger (historical operator name unverified) | Oral history: operating by 1948; c.1946 an estimate | D | Published oral history | Exact premises and father’s authenticated name unresolved; keep separate from Parkhill Road | S10 |
In Susan Grainger’s oral-history account, her parents ran a laundry on Park Road and her father is described as a former Blue Funnel ship’s carpenter. She estimates that the premises were acquired around 1946 and recalls that the laundry existed when she was born there in 1948. The house number, formal trading name and final operating year remain unresolved; Parkhill Road is a separate location. | |||||||
| L16 | 493 Prescot Road, Old Swan | Wong Tin | Published street transcription labelled 1946 | C | Secondary directory transcription | Original volume, operator identity and period need checking | S11 |
The Old Swan street transcription headed “Residents 1946” lists Wong Tin’s laundry at 493 Prescot Road. This is a published transcription of a directory, rather than an original volume inspected for this entry. Its edition, printed page and operator identification need confirmation before the address can be given a fuller trading history; it is distinct from the reported laundry at 558 Prescot Road. | |||||||
| L17 | 2 Woodhall Road, Old Swan | Chang’s Laundry | Published street transcription labelled 1946 | C, E | Tentative Chinese-laundry lead | Chinese ownership and original operator unverified | S11 |
The same published Old Swan transcription places Chang’s Laundry at number 2 in its Woodhall Road sequence. The wording identifies a reported laundry name, but “Chang” alone does not establish the proprietor’s identity or Chinese ownership. The original street and classified trade entries are needed before this can be treated as a confirmed Chinese-owned business. | |||||||
| L18 | 90 Derby Lane, Old Swan | Mak’s Chinese Laundry | Published street transcription labelled 1946 | C | Secondary directory transcription | Confirm original edition, operator and trading dates | S11 |
The street list labelled 1946 explicitly describes the business at 90 Derby Lane as Mak’s Chinese Laundry. That wording is preserved as a secondary transcription, not an independently examined original directory entry. The original edition and page, proprietor’s full name and earlier or later trading records remain to be found. | |||||||
| L19 | 2 Lower Breck Road | Possible Loo family laundry | Family-authored account links address to 1930 residence, also describes a laundry | D, E | Residential address; business unconfirmed | No original 1930 laundry listing examined; do not count as proved business | — |
A family-authored account associates Sow Loo and Catherine Loo with 2 Lower Breck Road around 1930 and separately describes a small laundry there. The reported residential or registration address does not itself establish commercial use. No original laundry listing has been examined for these premises, so ownership, operation and any succession from 230 County Road remain unproved. | |||||||
| L20 | 286 West Derby Road, Tuebrook Family-reported address; original street heading missing | Leong W. & Son laundry; Leong Wo (family identification) | Undated directory crop at no. 286; late 1950s–1960s trading reported in family recollection | A (partial), D, E | Provisional address / business lead | Directory street heading, title/year and page; 1939 Register address/reference and record link; proprietor identity and trading dates. No proven connection to G. Leong at L09, Penny Lane. | S15, S16, S17 |
An undated directory crop reads “286 Leong W. & Son laundry”, but does not show the street heading, edition or page. Family recollection supplies West Derby Road, the name Leong Wo and trading during the late 1950s and 1960s. A separate cropped 1939 Register extract contains laundry occupations at number 286, but has not been independently linked to this street or business. The lead remains provisional, with no established connection to G. Leong at Penny Lane. | |||||||
| L21 | 2a Brompton Road, Edge Lane / West Derby Contributor-caption address; original census address page unverified | Fong Lum | 1921 census fragment: laundry work, own-account employer, working at home; separate 1919 laundryman description | A (partial), D, E | Documented occupation; premises provisional | Original census address page and full reference; numbered directory or rate records; whether a separate laundry shop operated here. No identity merge with W01 or the County Road operators. | S23, S27, S28 |
A supplied 1921 census fragment describes Fong Lum doing laundry work on his own account, as an employer working at home. The address 2a Brompton Road comes from a contributor’s caption, not the original address page. A 1919 passenger-list extract separately records “Lum, Fong” as a laundryman, without naming a workplace. A 1916 church-register extract associates him with 141 Laird Street as a Chinese shopkeeper; a distinct Brompton Road shop and identity with the Laird Street directory operators remain unproved. | |||||||
| L22 | 294 Smithdown Road | Gong family / “T. Gongs” (recalled trading name) | Laundry recalled around 1966; electoral-roll address excerpt labelled 1967 by its contributor, edition unverified | A (partial), D, E | Eyewitness business lead; address evidence | Original electoral-roll edition and full citation; laundry directory listing; legal trading name, proprietor and first/last trading years. An electoral entry alone does not establish a business. | S24 |
A neighbour’s eyewitness account recalls a Chinese laundry at 294 Smithdown Road around 1966 and remembers the trading name “T. Gongs”. A photographed electoral-roll excerpt records an elector at the numbered address, but gives no occupation or business details. Its supplied 1967 date still needs confirmation from the full volume. Together these sources support an address lead, while the legal business name, proprietor and trading boundaries remain unresolved. | |||||||
| L23 | 43 Walton Lane, Liverpool 4 | Tam Tung Shing Laundry; Tat Yee (printed as proprietor) | Price sheet advertises equipment installed from 11 December 1963; handwritten price-list revision dated 26 July 1965; family trading dates approximate | A (partial), D, E | Documented business name and address | Original document provenance and directory/rate entries; legal ownership, succession and opening/closure dates; advertised equipment installation not independently verified. Photograph date and reproduction rights unresolved. | S25, S26 |
A historical price sheet names Tam Tung Shing Laundry at 43 Walton Lane and prints Tat Yee as proprietor. It advertises equipment installed from December 1963 and carries a handwritten price-list amendment dated 26 July 1965. Family recollection places the laundry roughly between 1959 and 1965/66 and identifies a historical group photograph as taken outside the shop. The photograph’s date, legal ownership and precise opening and closing years remain unverified. | |||||||
| L24 | 93 Oakfield Road, Anfield | Trading name unknown | c.1954–1964: unverified family estimate, not established opening or closure dates | D | Provisional family-reported premises lead | Contemporary directory confirmation, trading name, individual business roles and exact trading dates; continuous operation not established | S29 |
A family account reports a Chinese laundry at 93 Oakfield Road, Anfield, and suggests an approximate trading period of 1954–1964. The trading name is unknown. No contemporary directory entry has yet independently confirmed the business, and the proposed years do not establish its opening, closure or continuous operation. Original street, classified and alphabetical directory entries are needed to test the premises and trading period. | |||||||
Wirral / Birkenhead / Tranmere / New Ferry 15 entries
| ID | Address or area | Name / business | Recorded period / evidence | Grade | Classification | What remains unverified | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| W01 | 141 Laird Street, Birkenhead | Lee Fong On; Fong Kee; Elea Fong (1921 occupational account) | 1914 original directory; 1921 original census reviewed in previous research | A | Documented directory/census evidence | Any connection to Walton Fong family unproved | S13 |
The 1914 Kelly’s Directory of Cheshire records Lee Fong On at 141 Laird Street. Census evidence examined in the earlier research also associates Fong Kee and a laundryman named Elea Fong with the address in 1921. These records support a laundry-related history at the premises, but do not establish that the different names identify one operator or that this Elea Fong was the later County Road trader. A 1916 church-register extract separately records Fong Lum here as a Chinese shopkeeper; see L21. It does not identify him with these operators or establish laundry trade here in 1916. | |||||||
| W02 | 342 Borough Road, Birkenhead | Fong Chung Lee / Fong Chang Lee (reported variants) | 1946 certificate description and recollection of early 1960s laundry | D | Community/certificate report | Original certificate, operator succession and trading dates require verification | — |
Family accounts and reported 1946 certificate details associate Fong Chung Lee / Fong Chang Lee with 342 Borough Road. A separate local recollection describes a laundry there into the early 1960s. Those references do not identify all the intervening operators or prove uninterrupted trading. The original certificate, business listings and succession between the named people still need to be established. | |||||||
| W03 | 360 Borough Road | Lee Fong | 1914 original directory | A | Documented directory listing | Other dates and possible links to W08 unproved | S13 |
Lee Fong appears at 360 Borough Road in the 1914 directory, providing a dated record for this numbered address. The similarity to Fong Chung Lee at 342 Borough Road and the Fong Lee photographic lead does not establish a shared owner or business. The three records remain separate until contemporary identifying evidence explains any relationship. | |||||||
| W04 | 464 Borough Road | Lee Loo Wah | 1914 original directory | A | Documented directory listing | Other trading dates unknown | S13 |
The 1914 Kelly’s Directory of Cheshire records Lee Loo Wah’s laundry at 464 Borough Road. This gives the register a named trader, numbered premises and one documented year. Earlier and later directory entries are still needed to establish the business’s duration, any successors and the circumstances of its closure. | |||||||
| W05 | 6 Church Road, Higher Tranmere | Lee Fong You | 1914 original directory | A | Documented directory listing | Other trading dates unknown | S13 |
Lee Fong You is recorded at 6 Church Road, Higher Tranmere, in the 1914 directory. The entry documents the laundry at this specific address for that edition. Its opening date, later operators and final year of trade have not been established, and similar names elsewhere should not be treated as an automatic identity match. | |||||||
| W06 | 43 Union Street, Tranmere | Lee King Hung | 1914 original directory | A | Documented directory listing | Other trading dates unknown | S13 |
The 1914 directory identifies Lee King Hung’s laundry at 43 Union Street, Tranmere. It is a dated premises record rather than a complete history of the enterprise. Further street and trade-directory checks are needed to find earlier or later appearances, resolve name variants and establish whether the business continued under another operator. | |||||||
| W07 | 5 Brownlow Road, New Ferry | Lee Kwong | 1914 original directory | A | Documented directory listing | Other trading dates unknown | S13 |
Lee Kwong’s laundry is recorded at 5 Brownlow Road, New Ferry, in the 1914 directory. The numbered listing provides firmer location evidence than the separate undated recollection of a laundry near Toll Bar. Any connection between those two New Ferry leads remains unproved, as do the Brownlow Road business’s opening and closing dates. | |||||||
| W08 | Borough Road / Willmer Road, Birkenhead (number unknown) | Fong Lee Laundry | Historic photograph catalogue WPS 174; image not yet inspected | C | Archive catalogue lead | Not proved to be W02 at number 342; image date and address unknown | S14 |
The Wirral photograph index describes Fong Lee Laundry at the Borough Road junction with Willmer Road, under reference WPS 174. The catalogue establishes an image lead; the original photograph has not been inspected for this entry. Its street number, exposure date and signs still need checking, and proximity alone does not identify it with the business at 342 Borough Road. | |||||||
| W09 | Conway Street, Birkenhead (number unknown) | Unidentified Chinese laundry | Eyewitness memory suggests operation into early 1970s | D | Reported location | Exact street number and possible overlap with W15 unresolved | — |
An eyewitness recollection describes taking collars to a laundry on Conway Street and places it between the former Conway Street School and the Crown public house. The memory suggests operation into the early 1970s, but does not identify a numbered shop or proprietor. Historical maps and directories are needed to locate it and test any possible overlap with the 1914 occupational address in W15. | |||||||
| W10 | New Ferry near Toll Bar (number unknown) | Unidentified Chinese laundry | Undated community recollection | D | Reported location | Street number and possible duplicate with W07 unknown | — |
An undated community memory identifies a Chinese laundry near Toll Bar in New Ferry. It does not supply a street number, named trader or operating period, so the site cannot yet be mapped confidently. It may overlap the documented Brownlow Road laundry in W07, but that relationship remains a question for original address records. | |||||||
| W11 | 90 Oxton Road, Birkenhead | Frank Wing Yow Soo family | Published memoir recalls wartime laundry before bombing | C, D | Published memoir | Exact trading years and contemporary directory confirmation needed | — |
In the memoir Wartime Life in a Chinese Laundry, Frank Wing Yow Soo places his family’s wartime laundry at 90 Oxton Road and describes its loss through bombing. This is an attributed personal account, not a directory-based chronology. The exact trading years and bombing date remain unverified, and this narrator should not be confused with the footballer Frank Soo. | |||||||
| W12 | 66 Oxton Road, Birkenhead | Frank Wing Yow Soo family | Same memoir recalls family reopening after wartime bombing | C, D | Reported relocation | Likely linked to W11, not necessarily a second simultaneous business | — |
The same family memoir describes reopening the laundry at 66 Oxton Road after the earlier premises at number 90 were bombed. The two register entries therefore record reported stages in a relocation, not proof of two laundries trading simultaneously. Contemporary directories are still needed to establish the move’s date, business name and period at number 66. | |||||||
| W13 | Birkenhead (street and number unknown) | Ling family laundry | Archive catalogue describes oral history; reported closure in 1954 | C | Oral-history catalogue only | Original transcript unexamined; possible overlap with other location | — |
The London Archives collection catalogue describes an oral-history transcript called Our Laundrette in Birkenhead, concerning the Ling family’s laundry. Its background note says the laundry closed in 1954 and the family opened a restaurant. The transcript itself has not been examined and the street address remains unidentified, so this catalogue lead may overlap another Birkenhead entry. | |||||||
| W14 | 241 New Chester Road, New Ferry | Lee Sam | 1914 original directory: laundry | A | Documented premises | Business succession and other trading years unknown | S13 |
The 1914 directory explicitly lists Lee Sam and a laundry at 241 New Chester Road, New Ferry. The wording supports commercial use at numbered premises in that edition. It does not establish an opening date, continuous trade afterwards or a relationship with other people named Lee Sam; those questions require further identifying records. | |||||||
| W15 | 270 Conway Street, Birkenhead | Lee Low Sing | 1914 original directory: occupation “laundryman” | A | Occupational address only | Not yet proved to have operated a laundry at number 270 | S13 |
The 1914 directory describes Lee Low Sing as a laundryman at 270 Conway Street. That is evidence of an occupation and an associated address, but it does not by itself show that number 270 was an operating laundry. A classified trade entry or other business record is needed before treating the premises as a confirmed shop or linking it to the later Conway Street recollection. | |||||||

| C01 | 10 High Street | Jim Lee High Class Laundry / Jim Lee & Son | Advertisement attributed to November 1951; family report of business closing 1969 | A, D | Advertised business; final site uncertain | 1951 full issue and address of 1969 closure not confirmed; private photos excluded | — |
A supplied advertisement attributed to November 1951 identifies Jim Lee’s High Class Laundry / Jim Lee & Son at 10 High Street. It also names 60 Nantwich Road as a receiving office, which is not counted as another operating laundry. Family testimony dates the Crewe business’s closure to 1969, but has not established that High Street was its final trading address. | |||||||
| C02 | 47 Earle Street | Jim Lee family (residential lead) | Family residential address associated with 1969 | D | Family address, not confirmed laundry | Do not treat as the laundry’s final operating premises without an original record | — |
The Jim Lee family is associated with 47 Earle Street around 1969 through family recollection. This is recorded as a residential address, not a verified laundry site. The reported closure of the family business that year cannot be assigned to Earle Street without an original business listing or another source establishing where the laundry was then operating. | |||||||
| C03 | 106 Nantwich Road | Wah Sing | Undated historical/community recollection | D | Reported location | Original directory and any connection to Jim Lee unverified | — |
A contributed recollection associates Wah Sing with a Chinese laundry at 106 Nantwich Road. No dated directory entry or original business document has yet confirmed the account. The trading period and any relationship with Jim Lee’s Crewe laundry remain unresolved; similarity of trade and locality does not establish business succession. | |||||||

| R01 | 35 Sussex Street | C. C. Lee family | Published family recollections, approximately 1932–42 | C, D | Published family account | Original Welsh directory confirmation outstanding | S7 |
Sue Lee’s recollections place the C. C. Lee family at 35 Sussex Street around 1932–42. She describes a laundry with an industrial electric washing machine for coloured items and a motor-driven calender for pressing household linen, alongside the familiar washing and finishing work. It provides a useful comparison with her Great George Street account, although the precise Rhyl trading dates still need checking in Welsh directories. | |||||||
Additional location and publication notes
60 Nantwich Road, Crewe was mentioned in an advertisement as a receiving office for Jim Lee’s laundry; it is not counted as a separate operating laundry. Family and photographic material has been withheld where public reproduction rights are not established.
Descriptions of a business in two different years do not establish continuous operation between those dates. For corrections, please contact Out in Liverpool with the research ID, an address and — wherever possible — a photograph or historical reference.

- S15: Undated historical directory crop supplied 14 October 2026: “286 Leong W. & Son laundry”. A (partial) applies only to the printed line as imaged, not a verified full address or date. Street heading, publication title/year and printed page reference are missing.
- S16: Family business-history recollection recorded 14 October 2026 (D): identifies 286 West Derby Road, Tuebrook and historical proprietor Leong Wo, with trading recalled during the late 1950s and 1960s. Address, proprietor identification and dates await independent verification.
- S17: Cropped 1939 Register extract, retained privately: open-row laundry occupations at number 286 (A, partial). Street heading and full archival reference are unverified; no independent link to this address or business has been established. It does not establish a 1939 trading date for L20 or L09.
- S23: Supplied 1921 census schedule fragment for Fong Lum: laundry work, own-account employer and work at home (A, partial). “2a Brompton Road, Edge Lane, West Derby” is a contributor-supplied item caption (D), not a reading from the original census address page. The address page, full archival reference and independent business-premises evidence remain outstanding (E).
- S24: Private evidence for L22, supplied 14 October 2026: a neighbour’s eyewitness recollection of a Chinese laundry around 1966 and the name “T. Gongs” (D), plus a photographed electoral-roll excerpt showing an elector at 294 Smithdown Road (A, partial). The contributor labels the roll 1967; its title/edition is unverified. The roll does not establish an occupation, proprietor or business. Personal elector and contributor details are omitted.
- S25: Photograph of a historical price sheet headed “TAM TUNG SHING LAUNDRY”, giving 43 Walton Lane, Liverpool 4 and “PROP: TAT YEE” (A, partial). It advertises equipment installed from 11 December 1963 and has a handwritten revised-price date of 26 July 1965. These are readings of the supplied document image; the physical original, printing date, legal ownership and actual equipment installation have not been independently verified.
- S26: Family business-history recollection and photograph-location attribution for L23, recorded 14–15 October 2026 (D). Trading is recalled roughly around 1959–1965/66; a historical group photograph is identified as taken outside the laundry at 43 Walton Lane. Neither the photograph nor the price sheet independently fixes opening or closing dates. The photograph’s exposure date, individual sitters and reproduction rights remain unverified; no image is reproduced.
- S27: St James’, Birkenhead, baptism-register extract, page 35, entries 307–308, January 1916: Fong Lum is associated with 141 Laird Street and described as a “Chinese shopkeeper” (A, partial). This supports a historical address association for W01/L21, not laundry trade there in 1916 or identity with Lee Fong On, Fong Kee or Elea Fong. Full archival citation and independent identity checks remain outstanding. Children’s details are omitted.
- S28: Supplied Kitano Maru passenger-list extract, London departure dated 17 May 1919, form P.M.25: “Lum, Fong” is described as a laundryman (A, partial). No laundry workplace is named. - S29: Privacy-screened summary of family testimony recorded for L24 in private master register v5.34 on 16 October 2026 (D). The address and approximate 1954–1964 period are reported by the family; no contemporary directory entry has independently confirmed the business. The trading name and individual business roles remain unverified. Private correspondence, contact details, personal family information and photographs are not reproduced.
- S21: Private business-evidence summary for L02, selectively adapted from master register v5.25: 1921 census occupation/employment evidence; 1922 and 1924 certificate descriptions of laundry work; Knowsley Archives transcriptions of 1922–27 directories; and the 1955-labelled Elea Fong directory fragment. Original images and private correspondence are not reproduced. Certificate occupations and directory names do not prove ownership of the building, identity equivalence or uninterrupted business succession.
- S22: Private evidence summary for C01: supplied Jim Lee advertisement image attributed to November 1951 and family testimony that the Crewe laundry closed in 1969. The full original issue/date and the final operating address remain unconfirmed. Family photographs and contributor communications are not reproduced.
